The Michael H. Minger Foundation has been addressing campus fire safety issues since Michael’s tragic death in 1998.
The Foundation was awarded grants by the Department of Homeland Security’s Fire Safety and Prevention Program focusing on getting valuable and potentially life saving information into the hands of students.
The Minger Foundation Mission
In 2010 the Foundation announced funding for two projects; one to develop fire safety information and protocols for students with disabilities, and the second project to partner students with their local fire departments to serve through a community service project to help at risk communities. Students learning through helping.
The DHS Grant Programs developed by the Minger Foundation will be valuable tools in empowering students to take an active roll in their own safety. It will give them the knowledge they have been missing from lack of age related programs and help them understand the real danger of fire and the importance of fire safety on and off campus.
The Minger Foundation’s ongoing projects:
The University of Cumberlands Building Project: A new project through the Minger Foundation is taking shape. A new building to be constructed as a model residence for college students.
Disability Fire Safety Project: The Minger Foundation is working with a production company and college students to develop effective fire safety messaging that will impact our understanding of the importance of fire safety not just while in college, but for their lifetime.
